I’ve always struggled to rest. How about you?

On a gray Saturday in Arkansas, the drumming rain simply refused to let me rush around.

Instead of ticking items off my endless list, I sat still and observed the beautiful life around me.

In that unexpected hush, God reminded me that He meets us not only in grand moments but in ordinary, soaked-through Saturdays.

This is my modern psalm of rest when rest doesn’t come easily

Written April 4, 2026, for the woman who can’t rest.

Rain

Lord, it’s currently raining—
a heavy, steady rain
that drums on the roof and swells the gutters
until the whole world feels soaked through.

The dog has settled into her bed.

The cat has claimed my lap,
warm and certain, as if it has always belonged to him.

The grandbabies bend over their paper,
crayons moving slow and deliberate,
building bright worlds while the real one
washes gray outside the window.

You made this, didn’t You?

Not only the rain—
but this particular Saturday,
this gentle hush,
this quiet permission
to do nothing at all
and call it holy.

You know I’m not a woman who rests easily.
The lists chase me even into dreams.
The to-dos slip through every door I try to close.

But today? 

Today the rain is louder than my lists.

Today the cat is heavier than my guilt.

Today You have lowered the sky
and told the noisy earth to hush.

So I’m hushing.

I’m not cleaning.
I’m not worrying. 
I’m not rushing.
I’m not striving.

I’m simply here
in the soft gray light,
with a creature breathing against my chest,
three small artists dreaming in color,
a mama dog keeping her quiet watch,
and You—
present the way rain is present:

steady, unhurried,
asking nothing,
needing no thanks.

This is enough.

You are enough.

For once,
I am enough.

Let it rain, Lord.

Every king knew how to make an entrance — war horse for power, chariot for spectacle.

Jesus rode in on a donkey instead… and changed everything.

And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Think

Every king in the ancient world knew how to make an entrance. A war horse meant conquest. A chariot meant spectacle. An army meant power you could see, measure, and fear.

Jesus sent His disciples to find one specific animal and rode it into Jerusalem on purpose.

Zechariah had written this scene down five hundred years earlier: a king arriving just and lowly, riding on a donkey.

Not because a horse wasn’t available. Because in the ancient Near East, a king on a donkey was a king arriving in peace.

The war was already over. The victory was already secured. He was saying, before He opened His mouth: the kingdom I’m bringing doesn’t run on force.

The crowd missed it entirely. They waved palm branches and shouted Hosanna, which means save us now. They were right about who He was, but they had completely misread what He came to do.

They wanted a king who would ride against Rome and completely crush their oppressors.

He was riding toward a cross.

Two thousand years later, He still shows up on the donkey. We still keep watching for the war horse.

Take two minutes today and sit with this question honestly: Where are you waiting for God to show up in a loud, obvious, forceful way? And is it possible He’s already moving in the quieter thing right in front of you?

You don’t have to have an answer. Just hold the question through Holy Week.

⛪️ Prayer

God, you are the king who has never once arrived the way we expected, and you have never once been wrong about how to come. Forgive us for watching for the war horse when you’ve already ridden in on the donkey.

Open our eyes this Holy Week to what you’re actually doing, not just what we wish you would do.

We pray this trusting and believing in You. Amen.

1. The crowd celebrated Jesus for the wrong reason. Where have you done the same… right identity, wrong expectations for what He was going to do?

2. A king on a donkey signals peace: the war is already decided. What would change about how you’re living right now if you genuinely believed that?

3. He rode toward the cross knowing exactly what it was. What does it mean to you personally that He came anyway?

Someone in our community shared something that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.

She came to faith in a family from a completely different religion.

They don’t know know yet.

She was baptized in secret.

She’s carrying the most important thing in her life completely alone, and she asked us to pray for her protection, her faith, and her family’s hearts.

I wrote this for her… and for anyone else out there holding faith in a place where it isn’t yet safe to say so out loud.

Written March 17, 2026, for the ones who know Him but cannot yet say so out loud.

Nobody Knows

I came to You quietly, Lord.
No one watched.
No one sang.
The water was cold and the moment was real
and I walked out of it changed…
into a life that looks exactly the same from the outside.

Nobody knows.

I sit at the table with the people I love most
and carry You like a secret tucked beneath the ordinary —
the passing of bread,
the familiar voices,
the life we’ve built together
that does not yet have room for this.

I am not ashamed of You.
I want to say that clearly,
even if it’s just in the quiet where only You can hear:
I am not ashamed.

I am afraid.

And I know You know the difference.

You were there in the water.
You saw the whole thing.
You watched me come up from under
and You didn’t ask me to announce it.
You just said: you are mine.

That was enough.

It’s enough today
when the table is full
and I’m holding something
nobody is ready to hold with me.

Lord, I ask for the thing I cannot ask anyone else for:

Keep this.

Keep what You started in me.
Let it grow in the dark the way roots do —
quietly, without applause,
toward something only You can see now.

And in Your time, not mine,
open what is closed.
Soften what is hard.
Bring the day when I don’t have to be quiet anymore.

Until then,
I will carry You the only way I can right now.

Secretly.
Gratefully.
Completely.

Because being known by You
is not nothing.

It is everything.

💌 Before You Go

If you want to understand what it means to carry faith in a world that’s hostile to it, Nabeel Qureshi’s Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus is one of the most honest books I’ve encountered on that experience.

The tornado sirens went off just before dark last night. We gathered the grandchildren and went to safety… five little ones who had no idea what was happening outside and no interest in finding out. They had toy trucks and a flashlight they found in the corner. They also had each other.

I watched them play and prayed over them at the same time, and somewhere in that hour God handed me this psalm.

They Didn't Know

The winds came at dusk, Lord.

We heard them before we saw them…
that low, rolling pressure
that makes the air feel wrong.

We gathered the little ones
and rushed to safety.

And there in that small safe place,
five small people made a world out of toy trucks
and the flashlight they found in the corner.

They didn’t know.

They giggled over nothing.

They traded cars and argued over who had the blue one
and fell into each other laughing
while the branches hit the roof above their heads.

They didn’t know.

And I watched them, Lord…
watched them with that particular ache
that lives somewhere between terror and tenderness,
praying over littles who don’t know they need it,
standing guard over joy
that has no idea what’s howling outside.

How many times have You done this for me?

Not with fear… You have none.

But with that calm, sovereign watch
that never sleeps and never wavers,
keeping the roof sturdy above my head
while I played on the floor below.

How many storms rolled through
while I was unbothered, unaware,
trading ordinary moments with ordinary people
on what was actually an extraordinary night?

How many branches fell
while I laughed in my own small world?

The winds calmed the way they always do.

We came out from the safe area.

The little ones ran straight inside
and kept right on playing…
cousins tumbling over each other,
still unbothered, still laughing,
as if the world had never tilted.

And the adults sat together in the quiet after,
just breathing the same air,
whispering gratitude.

They still didn’t know.

And maybe that’s the gift, Lord.

Not the knowing…
but the One who knows for us.

The One who counts the branches before they fall
and keeps watch in the dark
over everyone playing on the floor.

Be thou my shelter when I am the child.

Keep me when I don’t know to ask.

And when the winds calm
and life just continues…
let me remember, just for a moment,
that You were there.

That You were always there.

Amen.
